Hindsight is always 20/20, or so they say. As we moved from our precious and nearly perfect bungalo, Kenner, and took on a new project (and what a project it is!) I find myself missing Kenner. While my main blog, Renovating Tara (renovatingtara.blogspot.com), chronicles the here and now, Renovating Kenner will examine what has been.
Kenner wasn't always perfect. Tara isn't perfect (yet!), and the next house is far from perfect I know. But here's something I've learned that is as true as the above adage about hindsight: perfection isn't the end goal in a renovation. My version of perfect is different than yours, and no house (like no spouse) will ever be perfect.
So what are we to set our sights on achieving every time we set out to transform a house? Is it functionality that we're seeking? Smart design? A timeless look? What are we hoping to achieve?
I wish I knew. What I do know is that every house you live in, like every person you meet, is completely different. You can't force a bungalo to be modern, and you can't expect a castle to behave like a cottege. Some designers would disagree with me here, but I have to say that in our experience thus far we find it's best to pay attention to what works with the house and go from there. For Kenner, that was a 1920s bungalo vibe. Let's see how Kenner progressed- in a nine year span- from good (ish) to great.
